The ride hailing market is still bustling with people
picture
For some people, opening a ride hailing service is a temporary solution during the window period. After completing the transition, they were confident that they could start again. For another group of people, perhaps the ideal is just three meals a year, and the income from diligently driving ride hailing services is enough for them to stay.

Title: "Dear passenger, hello"
In the past year, people who often take taxis can feel that there are more and more drivers driving ride hailing services.
A blogger from Xi'an found that it is now easier to hail a car than before, and the proportion of new cars being hailed is also increasing. In the past six months, he has often encountered some novice drivers who are obviously not familiar with the route.
Since the beginning of this year, transportation bureaus in Shenzhen, Chongqing, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi and other places have successively issued risk warning information for the ride hailing industry, constantly reminding people to enter this industry with caution.
Nevertheless, there are still people who choose to join. according to data from the Ministry of Transport, as of May 31, 2024, a total of 351 ride hailing platform companies in China have obtained operating licenses for ride hailing platforms; A total of 7.033 million ride hailing driver's licenses and 2.948 million vehicle transportation licenses were issued in various regions, setting a new historical high.
Why are there still a large number of people rushing into the fiercely competitive ride hailing industry? And for those who have always been in this industry, what makes them stick to it? New Weekly talked to several ride hailing drivers about their efforts and expectations in this industry.
picture
Driving a ride hailing service is not just a physical activity
Xiaoyong from Hainan is currently considering driving a ride hailing service after work. She has just gotten married and wants to provide more financial security for her family when she doesn't have children. In the years when ride hailing services were rapidly rising, this was a common choice that was easy to make money and had the freedom to come and go.
For someone like Xiaoyong who doesn't have a car but wants to enter the industry, buying a car or renting a car has become the first choice they have to face. After posting to ask netizens, Xiaoyong's answer gradually became clear.
If you buy a car by yourself, a model that meets the platform's requirements usually costs more than 70000 to 80000 yuan. Those who are unsure if they can persist in the long term often choose to rent a car, even though they have to pay several thousand yuan in rent every month. For novice drivers who want to try the waters, renting a car is simple, convenient, more flexible, and most importantly, has less economic pressure.
picture

So Xiaoyong rented a tram and planned to take turns driving with her husband for 5 hours after work. A netizen in the comment section reminded her, "Two people must open two accounts, but the driving time for each account is too short, and you may only earn rent for a busy month
Once you get on the bus, getting off the bus is no longer an easy task. Many drivers describe their mentality after "getting on the car" as equivalent to "owing hundreds of yuan in car rental/loan every day when they wake up". Some people stop for very little time in order not to waste the money they have already paid.
In recent years, with the gradual standardization of the industry, regulatory authorities have requirements for ride hailing models and certificates. This to some extent means that in order to have stable income, drivers must spend time managing their own accounts.
In other words, it means investing more energy.
Zhang Jin drives a ride hailing service in Beijing, departing at 7am every day and returning home at 10pm. In order to prevent drivers from fatigue driving, the platform has corresponding rules. Taking Didi as an example, if the driver's service time reaches 4 hours, they will be forced to take a 20 minute break; If the billing period exceeds 10 hours, a mandatory 6-hour rest will be required. In January 2024, he caught a cold and was prone to fatigue from taking medication. However, in order to balance income and safety, he slept during the day and wore a mask while driving at night for a week.
If you want to have a satisfactory income, you need to try to ensure that you drive during peak hours in the morning and evening. Shenzhen ride hailing driver Liu Shanshan told New Weekly, "If you can't stick to it, don't go ride hailing anymore
Regularly and stably driving is also encouraged by the platform. Drivers have a corresponding scoring mechanism, which is composed of various factors such as vehicle standards, completion status, passenger evaluations, and driving safety. A higher score often means a greater advantage when accepting orders. The easiest way for drivers to maintain high scores is to maintain good service quality and try to continue taking orders during the morning and evening rush hours.
picture

Liu Shanshan entered the industry in 2019 and persisted throughout the three years of the pandemic. At that time, earning over 10000 yuan per month was relatively easy. But in the second half of 2023, she found that it seemed difficult to take orders during peak periods.
If we were lucky in the past, we could earn three to four hundred yuan during the morning rush hour. Now, with only two hundred yuan, we can enjoy ourselves. From 5 pm to 7 pm during the evening rush hour, sometimes I can't even get a single order
In order to secure more orders, drivers have summarized various tips. Some people pay attention to Tiktok and Weibo in the same city. When they see large-scale activities and examinations, they go to corresponding places to receive orders; Some people read people's expressions and know what kind of passengers to chat with and how to get good reviews.
picture
When low prices encounter layers of commission from aggregation platforms
In addition to the daily discussion of order taking skills, many ride hailing drivers often face another problem - whether to take cheap orders or not.
A few years ago, in order to meet the different travel needs of more users, the affordable category of online ride hailing, represented by special offers, emerged. On the one hand, it attracted passengers to take a taxi by reducing fares, and on the other hand, it also achieved the goal of increasing driver order volume and driver income.
But the drivers have never found a standard answer:
Some people believe that the cost-effectiveness of special offers is not high, and they would rather focus on other types of orders; Some people also believe that accumulating small amounts through special offers will always be reflected in the final income.
Yu Chao drives a ride hailing service in Huadu, Guangzhou. He told New Weekly, "There are too many ride hailing platforms now, and everyone is competing for lower prices
According to data from the Ministry of Transport, as of May 2024, a total of 351 ride hailing platform companies in China have obtained operating licenses for ride hailing platforms, with continuous growth. Drivers have more choices, but this also means more intense competition.
picture

Among them, special offers are an important means for many platforms to attract consumers. In this mode, the system will estimate a fixed itinerary price in advance, which is often cheaper than real-time pricing orders.
However, many drivers are not very fond of special offers.
The special offer encountering traffic congestion is even more headache inducing for drivers. especially during rush hour traffic jams, drivers may only be able to place one or two orders per hour. In contrast, if the driver takes long-distance orders that are not congested on the road, they will receive higher revenue in the same amount of time.
In this regard, New Weekly learned that since August 2023, Didi has taken the lead in adjusting preferential pricing rules in the industry, and has piloted real-time pricing for preferential orders in more than 200 cities, including Suzhou, Qingdao, Nanning, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Chongqing. After real-time pricing, drivers can also receive rewards corresponding to the waiting time in traffic jams; When passengers request the driver to cover an additional distance, the driver will receive compensation for the extra distance covered; The acceptance switch for special orders can be voluntarily turned on or off, and the driver has the right to choose.
Gaode Taxi, an aggregation platform, has also implemented a policy that allows drivers to receive a maximum subsidy of 10 yuan per order if they encounter traffic congestion during a "fixed price" order.
Unlike some drivers who are unwilling to accept special offers, many drivers still turn on the option to accept special offers in order to take more orders within a limited time.
Yu Chao's analysis: "In the past two years, consumer spending has been downgraded, and more and more passengers are willing to take affordable types such as carpooling and discounted cars. If drivers don't want to miss out on this part of the 'cake', it's best to accept discounted orders
Unlike other drivers, Yu Chao is more willing to accept discounted orders, although most orders are not expensive, he can accept around 30 orders per day. If it's a express ticket, you can't receive so many in a day. Some drivers wait for half an hour to receive one ticket
picture
(Image/Mobile search Team 404)
In addition, the ride hailing market has also undergone changes in recent years, with more and more drivers taking orders through aggregation platforms. The online ride hailing regulatory information exchange system received a total of 944 million orders in May 2024, of which 242 million orders were completed by platforms (commonly known as "aggregation platforms") that provide services to passengers and ride hailing platform companies, accounting for 26%, and gradually expanding.
New issues have also emerged.
Since the second half of 2023, multiple regulatory authorities have explicitly required ride hailing aggregation platforms and cooperative ride hailing platform companies to implement clear pricing and not disrupt market order with unfair pricing behavior. Ride hailing aggregation platforms are not allowed to interfere with the pricing behavior of ride hailing platform companies.
According to a report by Shangguan News, many taxi orders are going through layers of "reselling" on aggregation platforms, and under fierce competition, drivers' income is getting lower and lower.
As participants in the market, while drivers strive to increase their income, ride hailing platforms like Didi are also making concessions.
According to data from Didi, during the 2023 National Day holiday alone, Didi has invested a total of 1 billion yuan in subsidies and rewards, covering scenarios such as ride hailing, self driving, and freight moving. More than 300 million yuan in rewards have been directly distributed to drivers to increase their income. During the May Day holiday in 2024, Didi has launched ten major welfare and care measures, including providing over 300 million yuan in driver subsidies, as well as various rewards such as flow acceleration cards, commission free cards, and completion awards, further increasing driver income.
In addition to encouraging and subsidizing drivers, the platform is also increasing investment to promote the release of vitality on the consumer side. New Weekly learned that recently, Didi has launched a "one order in the morning, free on summer nights" campaign in 130 cities across the country, including Guangzhou, Xi'an, Changsha, Hangzhou, Zhengzhou, etc. By distributing ride hailing coupons to users, it meets the current strong demand for ride hailing services. Not only that, Didi has also distributed taxi category coupons in 66 cities across the country, including Shenyang, Changchun, Wuxi, Changsha, Qingdao, and Chengdu. It has also launched various forms of activities, such as completing single lottery, limited time coupon collection, and friend assisted coupon collection, to promote the development of the night economy.
picture
It's difficult to balance supporting and caring for the family
Nowadays, for many people, driving a ride hailing service is still considered a fairly decent way to make money, without having to endure the sun and rain, and can still have a decent income.
According to the "Transportation Industry Employment trend Report" released by 58.com in 2023, in terms of income, the recruitment of ride hailing drivers has the highest income, with companies paying an average of 11192 yuan per month.
However, multiple drivers told New Weekly that they generally face significant life pressure as they have a monthly turnover of over ten thousand yuan.
According to the 2021 China First tier City Travel Platform Research Report by Tsinghua University, the average age of ride hailing drivers in first tier cities is around 40 years old, with the majority being middle-aged people who are both elderly and young.
Zhang Jin, 38 years old, left his hometown in Shanxi and came to Beijing with his wife a year ago. When he was in his hometown, he could earn over 7000 yuan per month by driving a truck, while his wife worked as a salesperson in a shopping mall with a monthly salary of 3000 yuan. Previously, children were young and couldn't live without their parents' care. When the youngest child started elementary school, the couple felt that they still needed to earn more money. "Now, everything we do cannot do without money.
Coincidentally, Zhang Jin's friend has been driving a ride hailing service in Beijing for many years. He said that the platform offers good benefits and there are many people taking taxis in big cities. He advised him to give it a try too.
picture

They rented a room in an urban village in Shunyi, while their wife worked at a restaurant. Zhang Jin, on the other hand, paid a rental deposit of 10000 yuan through a friend's introduction and started using online car hailing services. This place is relatively close to the Capital International Airport, suitable for online car hailing services, and the rent is cheap, only 750 yuan per month, with an additional heating fee of 300 yuan in winter.
Every month, in addition to rent, Zhang Jin also has to pay 5400 yuan for car rental. After deducting charging fees and other living expenses, the remaining money is saved for the children. The children stay in their hometown to study and are taken care of by their grandparents. When Zhang Jin returned home for the Chinese New Year, he didn't understand why children nowadays either watch TV or play on tablets. He only hoped that the children would study hard.
For ordinary people who can only rely on themselves for everything, earning money to support their families or accompanying them is often a choice between two, with no room for negotiation.
But in a different identity and situation, such as those women who are expected to balance work and family more, ride hailing offers them some possibilities.
According to the 2024 Didi Digital Mobility Women's Ecology Report, over one million female drivers worldwide will earn income through the Didi platform in 2023. Among them, 82% of female drivers agree that ride hailing services have flexible schedules, 52% of female drivers choose to ride on Didi to increase their income sources, and another 22% choose to avoid workplace pressure.
Lin Xiaoyun, who settled in Shanghai, is one of them. She, born in the 1980s, gave birth to her second child in 2019. Later, due to the pandemic, she quit her sales job and focused on taking care of her family. At the beginning of 2023, she wanted to return to the workplace, but it was not easy to find a job. Nowadays, many young people have a graduate degree, and at our age, having a college degree is basically not advantageous
The two children in the family spend about 20000 yuan per month, and if she doesn't work, the pressure on her husband will be relatively high. Lin Xiaoyun's second child is about to start primary school, and she hopes to have flexible working hours to take care of her child at the same time. In the end, she chose to drive a ride hailing service.
From the grid to ride hailing services, Lin Xiaoyun initially had a psychological gap. "I just thought how could I become a rickshaw driver," but she gradually accepted the job. "They're right, the small carriage has a big world, and you can learn about many different people.
She insists on starting work during the morning rush hour every day. Although she has fewer trips during the night rush hour, her income will not be too poor because she maintains a regular schedule of trips.

After driving a ride hailing service for several months, Lin Xiaoyun felt that she was still struggling to take care of her child. Sometimes she had to rush to the morning rush hour, but her child started crying and fussing. Fortunately, my mother-in-law lives in the neighboring community, so on weekdays, Lin Xiaoyun leaves her child at her house. She was considering bringing her child back to her side when they started elementary school.
Lin Xiaoyun strives to balance work and family. Sometimes when I get tired of driving and the house is a bit messy, my husband understands quite well. Whenever I take a break, I do a big cleaning at home and he comes along
Lin Xiaoyun said that the job of ride hailing also gave her a sense of achievement.
As a female driver, Lin Xiaoyun sometimes encounters prejudice from passengers. Some people may think that our driving skills are not good and our reactions are slow. But if we drive the car well, we can also change their perception
More often than not, Lin Xiaoyun receives praise. Didi is quite user-friendly. Occasionally when I work late, most of the people I match are female passengers. When I meet female drivers, many girls are very happy and chat with me, even saying they can sleep in the car for a while with peace of mind
New Weekly found that not long ago, the Didi Public Evaluation Committee also invited users to vote for the desired ride hailing function, with "female passengers can choose female drivers" ranking first with 24.2% of the votes. Didi stated that it will develop a product plan as soon as possible and gradually invite users for internal testing.
