In Ukraine at the turn of winter and spring in 1944, a team of Soviet soldiers were cleaning the battlefield. Suddenly, the body of a German officer caught the attention of Soviet soldiers: next to the wreckage of an armored command vehicle, the German officer died holding a rifle in his arms, looking over 60 years old. After snowflakes fell, his temples were stained with speckled white. In the early spring of 1944, the winter chill in Ukraine had not yet completely subsided, with piercing winds mixed with flying snowflakes, and the smell of war gunpowder still permeated. In this war-torn land, a group of Soviet Red Army soldiers are busy carrying out post-war cleaning and restoration work. They shuttle through the devastated battlefield, carefully searching for any weapons, strategic materials, or important documents that may have been missed, which could be key clues to uncovering the enemy's operational patterns and strategic intentions. During the cleaning process, an unexpected discovery caught the attention of the soldiers. On the edge of a ruins severely destroyed by artillery fire, they discovered the body of a German military officer. The officer's face appeared exceptionally weathered, with deep traces of time on it. His temples were graying, recording his long and tumultuous experiences. Although his life had passed, he maintained a posture of tightly gripping the rifle, as if he had been steadfastly holding his position and faithfully fulfilling his military duties until the last moment of his life. After careful identification, the soldiers confirmed the identity of this officer - Lieutenant general William Stemmermann of the German Armed Forces. General Stemmermann, a veteran who fought bravely in World War I, also made remarkable achievements in the early stages of World War II, but unfortunately fell in the torrent of this war. At that time, the battlefield in Ukraine was the most stalemate of the Soviet German confrontation. Stemmerman commanded nearly 60000 German troops and was surrounded by the Soviet Red Army in the "Cherkase Pocket" in western Ukraine. The terrain here is complex and the defensive advantage is obvious, but for the trapped German army, the lack of food, ammunition, and medical resources posed a huge threat to their survival. Faced with such a desperate situation, General Stemmerman was extremely anxious and knew that sitting idly by would only lead to a breakdown of morale and a slim chance of survival. He repeatedly begged for approval from his superiors to break through in order to gain vitality. However, Nazi German leader Hitler firmly refused and regarded it as cowardice, believing that defending the position was the only way to uphold the honor of the German army. Hitler firmly believed that only by persistently resisting until the very last moment could the German army demonstrate their resilience. As time passed, the German army's strength gradually depleted, injuries and illnesses increased, and the Sixth Army Group was deeply besieged, on the brink of total annihilation. Although Manstein's reinforcements were delayed in attempting to break free, multiple attempts were unsuccessful. In the end, Manstein conveyed a desperate message to Stemmerman in a telegram on February 15th: "There is no hope for assistance, we will find our own way." After careful consideration, Stemmerman decided to order the troops to break through forcefully, regardless of everything. On the evening of the 16th, the German army abandoned their heavy weapons and quietly withdrew from their positions under the cover of a blizzard. Stemmermann personally led his guard troops to step back. Before evacuating, he had to make a painful decision, leaving over 2000 seriously injured soldiers in the snow to be taken care of by voluntarily left medical staff, waiting for Soviet prisoners of war. Under his command, the German breakout team struggled to advance amidst artillery fire and gunfire, with only soldiers capable of breaking through. As they set an example and inspired the soldiers to fight, he said, "I will go to the rear and wish you good luck. We will meet again outside the encirclement!". In the end, more than 40000 besieged soldiers successfully escaped, while Stemmerman remained forever in the ice and snow of Ukraine. Later, the Soviet army found his body next to a fierce battle ruins, and he still held his rifle tightly, surrounded by a damaged armored vehicle. Soviet Red Army general Konev personally visited the scene, paying tribute to Stemmerman's bravery and sacrifice, and ordered his body to be moved to his own tank and buried facing his hometown. The entire Soviet army fired their guns in tribute and gave this enemy general an extremely high military treatment, which was unprecedented in the Soviet German War. William Stemmerman, with his outstanding military talent and spirit of sacrifice, earned the respect of the Soviet people, and such an evaluation may be appropriate.
