What important life stages did Feng Jinyuan go through this year? How does he view life now? Pengpai News reporter Chen Sisi and Zhang Chengjun (03:49)
"I have been valuing wisdom and willing to learn since I was young. Although my body is paralyzed, I still work to earn money. However, I have found that as I age, the skills I used to rely on gradually become unreliable. I feel like I am going downhill, like it's dusk. What should I do?"
This is a question raised by Feng Jinyuan, a "gradually frozen person", to AI.
In the past 39 years, despite having only two fingers and one pair of eyes to move around, he has obtained a Japanese Level 1 certificate, translated 20 works, completed over a million word scripts, and designed multiple games that can be downloaded online. Standing at the forefront of artificial intelligence, he actively embraces the latest technology, attempting to write novels using AI, engage in conversations with AI, and discuss philosophical topics.

June 21, 2024 is the 24th "World Freezing Day" and also the eighth year for reporters from The Paper (www.thepaper. cn) to follow up on Feng Jinyuan.
The biggest change in his life over the past year was the death of his grandmother in her 90s due to illness. Six years ago, Feng Jinyuan's grandfather also passed away due to cancer. In his previous life, the two relatives who had been with him the most said goodbye, which also gave Feng Jinyuan more thoughts on life and death, and even drew attention to the current hot topic of AI resurrection.
Now, he has moved from a large house of about a hundred square meters to a small one bedroom apartment, where his daily life is taken care of by a housekeeper. "My parents are also getting old, so they chose to live alone because they didn't want their elderly and weak parents to worry too much about their condition," Feng Jinyuan said.
Feng Jinyuan moved into a new residence in April 2024, with one bedroom and one living room. He lives with his housekeeper. Feng Jinyuan moved into a new residence in April 2024, with one bedroom and one living room. He lives with his housekeeper.
Under worry and confusion, learn to let nature take its course
A high-rise building located on Zhongxing Road in Shanghai is Feng Jinyuan's current home, approximately 30-40 square meters, with a monthly rent of 5000 yuan, shared by him and his mother. 24 hours a day, living with a housekeeper. His mother lives nearby and often visits, while his father suffers from Parkinson's disease and is unable to walk on the ground. The opportunities for the father and son to meet are decreasing.
Feng Jinyuan's schedule is very regular: he wakes up at around 5 o'clock in the morning and lies in bed thinking about how to arrange his daily life and work. He also often has wild thoughts and ponders on some life philosophy. Until around 7 o'clock, the aunt helped him get up from bed, helped him have breakfast, turned on the computer, and a gradually freezing day began.
A backrest chair and a computer desk, Feng Jinyuan spent most of his life in a one square meter space,
He once said he was a person who crawled out of hell. Shortly after birth, Feng Jinyuan felt weak in his legs and feet. His parents took him to seek medical treatment everywhere, and his sense of powerlessness gradually expanded from his legs to his arms, hands, and even his head. The only thing that could move his whole body up and down was two fingers on his left hand and a pair of eyes.
But Feng Jinyuan repeatedly created miracles of life. He has obtained the Japanese Level 1 certificate and translated about 20 works; Since 2018, he has also attempted to write game scripts and design games. Some scripts, such as "You Linglan" and "Mountain Tea Train", have become game products and have been officially released to the public.
Feng Jinyuan discusses philosophical topics with artificial intelligence. Feng Jinyuan discusses philosophical topics with artificial intelligence.
In recent years, Feng Jinyuan has often lamented the "blow" of artificial intelligence to his translation work. "Nowadays, translation work is not easy to find, and he has only translated two Japanese social science books in the past year."
Apart from translation, his biggest hobby is game creation, but it seems that he has also encountered a bottleneck. During the period from 2019 to 2021, he created a nearly one million word game script called "Lingtao in the Twilight Sea", and is still looking for investors, hoping to complete a series of post production projects such as art and voice acting.
"Finding an investment is the most difficult thing. Only by injecting funds can a game script ultimately become a game product. It is impossible for me to do it alone." Feng Jinyuan said, "Before finding an investor for 'The Twilight Sea Lingtao', I spent more than half a year trying to create a game demo, just like a trial version of the game, which lasted for half an hour. I designed the computer program and told the beginning of the story."
A backchair and a computer desk, Feng Jinyuan spends almost every day like this.
For Feng Jinyuan, access to the latest technology on the Internet is the greatest pleasure and motivation of his life. In recent years, he has also continued to pay attention to the development of AI, trying to use AI to write game scripts, suspense novels, etc., and even started a dialogue with AI to discuss topics related to disease, life and death, and survival.
"Can you explain in detail that 'humanity is in a tension between an eternal self and an ideal self'?" When Feng Jinyuan asked this question to AI, the answer he received was: "Of course not." He had read the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard's' Fatal Illness, 'which explored the forms of despair in an individual's survival state and how to break free from despair and obtain true faith. The answer given to him by AI is: "To solve this tension and despair, humans need to identify with their existence through faith. Faith is a belief that transcends reason and can help people understand and accept the tension between reality and ideals, thereby overcoming despair."
He once asked AI, "I have valued wisdom and am willing to learn since I was young. Although my body is paralyzed, I still work to earn money. But I have found that as I age, the skills I used to rely on gradually become unreliable. I feel like I am going downhill, like it's dusk. What should I do?" This question seems to be his biggest concern and confusion for a year. AI told him, "Don't worry about tomorrow, just take responsibility for the difficulties of the day."
This kind of philosophical dialogue often takes place, and Feng Jinyuan sighed, "Talking about philosophy with a computer will make my mind move along. At least it will make me think and I can go back and read more books, which is better than daydreaming."
He admitted, "In the past few years, I have never believed in the arrangement of fate and felt that my life should not be like this. I believe that one person can change fate. Now, I have learned to let nature take its course, no longer set an impossible goal for myself, and constrain myself to strive to achieve it. Now, I will spend more time grateful for every small detail in life, as well as what kind of scenery I can see every day, who I can interact with, what I have done every day, and what kind of gains I have."
After my grandmother passed away, she refused to live with her mother
For Feng Jinyuan, the biggest change in life over the past year has been the passing of his grandmother.
In mid April 2024, he moved from his high-rise residence by the Suzhou River that he had previously rented with his grandmother to a high-rise building on Zhongxing Road. This place is closer to his mother's residence, and it was also the house that his mother helped him choose. Nowadays, a 70 year old mother visits him 2-3 times a week.
For over 6 years, he had been living with his elderly grandmother. Grandma is a bit deaf and can't listen to many things. She doesn't spend much time communicating with Feng Jinyuan, but she has always been very concerned about him. On February 23, 2024, the 93 year old grandmother passed away due to illness.
"After this year's New Year's Day holiday, my grandmother felt increasingly powerless and unable to eat. In early February, her family sent her to the hospital, and after that time, I haven't seen her again." Feng Jinyuan said, "My grandmother left due to age and organ failure. When she left, I was reluctant to let go. Before, when my grandmother was at home, I had to pay attention to her blood pressure, blood sugar, blood oxygen and other indicators. But now that she's suddenly gone, I feel like I've lost a lot of things and my heart is empty."
Due to limited mobility, Feng Jinyuan was unable to go to the hospital to see his grandmother for the last time. On the day his grandmother passed away, he bought himself a McDonald's Big Mac. "My grandmother loves to eat, and I bought it to commemorate her." He said that since my grandmother turned 80, he has been placing orders online to buy hamburgers for her. "When I was a child, my grandmother bought hamburgers for me to eat, and when she got old, I bought them for her. I didn't expect her to love them so much and have been eating them for so many years."
In Feng Jinyuan's memory, he grew up spending more time with his grandparents. In his early years, his father was away from work and rarely accompanied him, while his mother often came to visit him. In 2018, his grandfather passed away due to cancer, and it took Feng Jinyuan over a year to recover from the pain.
After his grandmother passed away this year, Feng Jinyuan's mother proposed to live with him, but Feng Jinyuan did not agree. "My mother is 70 years old and getting older. If I live with her, once there is a small pain, we will all worry about each other. If we don't live together, I won't tell her some insignificant pain, she has some minor problems, and I won't tell her. In this way, everyone will live more easily and calmly, and maintaining some distance is also good."
Thinking about AI reviving loved ones and lamenting the greatness of "gradually freezing people" Cai Lei
Shortly after his grandmother's death, Feng Jinyuan joined a public welfare organization called "Blue Envelope Left behind Children's Care Center" and became a volunteer. He established a one-on-one relationship with a left behind child who was studying in junior high school.
"He often comes to inquire about my learning problems and confusions, such as whether to take the college entrance exam or how to study efficiently. I also share my learning experience with him," Feng Jinyuan said. Such assistance and dedication make him feel like a person who has contributed to society to some extent.
Before the Spring Festival, Feng Jinyuan experienced a disease. He had a three month long bedsore, a palm sized wound infected and purulent, and a continuous high fever every day... During that time, he could only lie in bed every day. As he was unable to move his hands and feet, he couldn't use a computer, so he tried reading on his iPad, using voice control to flip pages and operate buttons. In three months, he read more than 10 books, covering theology, literature, horror novels, and more, one of which was Shi Tiesheng's "Me and the Temple of Earth".
As a writer with a similar history of paralysis, Feng Jinyuan read about Shi Tiesheng's thoughts on life and death, as well as fate, in his book, which resonated with him in many aspects. "Similar moods and lives, such reading makes me feel 'fed and clothed', but in fact, life is not that painful."
Feng Jinyuan revealed that he is also a reader of Pengpai News, often reading the stories of characters in Pengpai News, especially paying attention to the progress of "AI reviving loved ones" and the gradually frozen person "Cai Lei". "If conditions permit, I would also like to try using AI to 'resurrect' loved ones. But sometimes I am also thinking that such AI can mimic the voice and appearance of family members, but cannot replicate their hearts and thoughts. From this perspective, I actually have some resistance to such technology."
For the gradually frozen person Cai Lei, Feng Jinyuan lamented his greatness. "He is a very difficult person. His career was so successful in the first half of his life, and he has put in a lot of effort to reach such a high level of career. It is difficult to imagine how he would accept this reality when he found out that he was sick, after all, such a disease is a difficult suffering for anyone to accept." Compared to his own life, he thinks, "I knew I had this disease not long after I was born, and I have been accepting this reality since childhood. Perhaps, this kind of 'acceptance' and 'adaptation' come simpler."
What impressed him even more was that Cai Lei still did his best to benefit more similar patients and promote human progress in the diagnosis and treatment of ALS under such disease conditions. "It was like entering a 'Silent Ridge', realizing that there was no way ahead. Faced with a deep cliff, he still wanted to take a path that no one had walked and find a bright path. He said, 'It's really not easy to shoot the last bullet.' His wife is also great, always supporting her husband in finding a path of light, '" Feng Jinyuan said.
