Whether or not to admit students beyond the standard requires universities to abide by laws and regulations and adhere to professional judgment, which is rarely influenced by public opinion.

After vocational school student Jiang Ping became popular on the internet, many universities posted Weibo to congratulate her and welcome her to apply. Jiang Ping's math teacher stated in an interview that her dream is to enter Zhejiang University, so public opinion is particularly concerned about whether Zhejiang University can make an exception to admit Jiang Ping.
Regarding this, the staff of the Zhejiang University Admissions Office stated that it is difficult to answer this matter and they have not yet received any relevant notice. according to reports, a professor from the Mathematics department of Zhejiang University once posted on Weibo, welcoming Jiang Ping to study at Zhejiang University. The official Weibo account of Zhejiang University released a message saying, "Like Jiang Ping, have a dream, everyone is amazing! We wish every candidate at Zhejiang University.".
"Welcome to Zhejiang University to study" and "Blessing every candidate" are two different things from expressing an exception in admitting Jiang Ping. The way to study in university is not only by being admitted as a full-time student, but also by visiting, exchanging, and receiving further education in university. Zhejiang University welcomes Jiang Ping to study and apply, but she is cautious about making exceptions for admission, for a reason.
Despite the positive expectations of public opinion for the exceptional admission of Jiang Ping to universities, in reality, universities have corresponding regulations and procedures for admitting a student. Universities must abide by the law and adhere to professional judgment, and there are few cases where they are influenced by public opinion.
Essentially, the exceptional admission of a student by a university belongs to both educational and professional affairs. Whether to admit a student on an exceptional basis depends on two factors: first, whether the student is outstanding enough to meet the criteria for exceptional admission; The second is whether it complies with the policy on special admission.
The reason why Jiang Ping became popular is not only because she is particularly outstanding, but also because of her identity as a professional student. The identity of a vocational school student is in stark contrast to entering the final of a mathematics competition. But if she were not a vocational school student, but a student from a key high school, would public opinion be so concerned and call on universities to make an exception and admit her?
In fact, in order to avoid stimulating the competition heat and prevent students and parents from treating the competition with utilitarianism, China has cancelled the policies of bonus points and admission through recommendation in the college entrance examination for the Olympic Games. At present, only members of the national training team for high school students in the Olympic subject competition are eligible for recommendation.
The competition Jiang Ping participated in was a public welfare competition organized by a company. Although it also has international influence, it is not among the nationally recognized five university science competitions. Even if it achieves good results in the upcoming finals, relying on this competition result, it may still be difficult to qualify for university admission or recommendation.
Of course, this competition has fully demonstrated Jiang Ping's mathematical talent. How to better cultivate her and similar talents is a question that the education department and schools in China must consider.
Generally speaking, Jiang Ping's next growth path may be to enter undergraduate colleges in Jiangsu through the vocational education college entrance examination. According to her math teacher, due to professional limitations, she can only attend three universities in Jiangsu Province, preferably applying to Changshu Institute of Technology.
If Jiang Ping herself is more inclined to do mathematical research, can the undergraduate institution she enters create conditions for her to learn mathematics? Will she give up her interest in mathematics due to a lack of guidance from her teacher?
Some undergraduate colleges in Jiangsu also suggested that Jiang Ping could first study at their school, lay a solid foundation in mathematics, and then choose Zhejiang University for her future graduate studies. This is also a path, of course. At that time, universities can use the graduate recommendation policy to admit Jiang Ping, but the prerequisite is that Jiang Ping still maintains outstanding mathematical performance during her undergraduate period.
The current public opinion seems to be more hopeful that Zhejiang University can immediately make an exception by admitting Jiang Ping to university for further studies, believing that this is a "special matter" that will not cause any unfair or unjust issues, after all, Jiang Ping is "too special". This idea is understandable, but even if Zhejiang University can make an exception for admission, it seems inappropriate to act too hastily.

Firstly, Jiang Ping is currently studying at a vocational school and has excellent guidance from a math teacher. Secondly, this math competition has attracted attention to Jiang Ping and is also an important opportunity for her to reflect on her future development.
Undoubtedly, at present, many students in China study mathematics for the purpose of participating in competitions and advancing to higher education. But Jiang Ping should not belong to this category. So, she can combine her interests and make a plan for whether to make researching mathematics her career and career in the future.
If Jiang Ping considers Zhejiang University and other universities as her next learning goal, relevant universities may decide whether to break the rules and qualify for the Strong Foundation Plan campus test based on their math scores, and the university's professor committee will conduct an interview and assessment of their academic abilities.
In this way, universities can also provide better learning and development opportunities for "talented" students like Jiang Ping with the educational philosophy of "not limiting oneself to one style and lowering talents".
If Jiang Ping cannot enter a prestigious university for further education through the Strong Foundation Plan, then entering a regular undergraduate institution and laying a solid foundation in mathematics is also a practical choice. And this requires universities to create a good environment for her to study and research mathematics, including through exchange programs, giving her the opportunity to receive guidance from renowned teachers and nurturing her greater development.
