Nowadays, the wind of "burning my calories" has blown into university classrooms.
Teaching sports nutrition knowledge in the classroom, practicing running on the sports field, learning equipment climbing in the training hall, and having teachers accompany students to eat well and stay healthy in the cafeteria... Peking University has opened a compulsory physical education course called "Physical Fitness Enhancement: exercise and Diet" for undergraduate students, which has become a "weight loss magic lesson" passed down by Peking University students.
Unlike traditional physical education classes, this course aims to teach students how to scientifically and healthily achieve weight loss goals. The weight loss course at Peking University has been open for two years, and it not only helped one-third of students lose more than 5% of their weight, but also recorded a student losing 30 pounds in one semester.
Not only Peking University, but also Peking University of Science and Technology's summer fat burning camp has recently officially opened.
We are curious, why do universities offer weight loss classes? What kind of body anxiety do students have?
Losing 30 pounds in the first semester of 01 requires taking weight loss classes
On the evening of May 16th, the evening breeze of early summer blew lightly. On the track and field field of Peking University of Science and Technology, the students of the Summer Fat Burning Camp wore uniform sportswear and began their first collective training under the guidance of their coach.
Song Zhiquan, a teacher from the Sports department of Beijing University of Science and Technology who has guided multiple Olympic champions, served as the physical fitness coach for this fat burning camp. For the first training, he arranged interval training with moderate difficulty for the campers.
"The whole class includes different parts such as stretching, aerobic exercises, interval strength training, etc. Each movement has a downgraded version. If the camper cannot perform jumping movements, it can be changed to a downgraded version with less joint pressure," said Song Zhiquan.
During the first training, Song Zhiquan constantly encouraged the campers and even encouraged them to "paddle" or "slack off". His goal was simple - he hoped everyone would grit their teeth and persevere until the end.
"Don't rush to drink water when your heart rate is very high. Wait for your heart rate to slowly decrease before taking a sip of water." During the training, Song Zhiquan also taught the campers some exercise tips.
Beijing University of Science and Technology's Summer Fat Loss Camp opens
This summer's fat burning camp is extremely hot. In just 10 minutes of open registration, the number of applicants has exceeded a thousand.
After screening and body composition testing, among more than 1000 applicants, 300 had a BMI index exceeding 25 (BMI, normal range is 18.5-23.9, if BMI ≥ 24 is overweight, BMI ≥ 28 is obesity), meeting the admission criteria. However, due to limitations in venue and personnel equipment, the final number of formal campers was determined to be 68.
Before the summer fat burning camp at Peking University opened, a weight loss course for Peking University students had already started in the autumn semester of 2022.
It is understood that "Physical Fitness Enhancement: Sports and Diet" is one of the compulsory physical education courses offered by Peking University for undergraduate students. Although it is a compulsory course, it does not mean that everyone must take it. Instead, one can choose 4 out of all the compulsory physical education courses offered by the school and complete 4 credits.
Weight loss classes at Peking University
23rd grade undergraduate student Jian Qian chose this weight loss course. He, who is 175cm tall and weighs 85kg, has a BMI index of about 26, which is relatively high. Therefore, he has been thinking about how to scientifically lose weight.
"This course is not only a compulsory physical education course, but also teaches how to scientifically lose weight, which is tailor-made for me." Lou said, because the course is very popular, students who can attend the class need to draw lots to decide. He was lucky and successfully won.
Hou Xiaoyang, who entered Peking University in the autumn of 2023, was 1.85 meters tall, weighed 220 pounds, and had a BMI of 32, indicating obesity. He didn't expect that after a semester of weight loss classes, he could lose 30 pounds and become the current record holder for weight loss in this course.
Like many overweight people, Cheng Lu from Peking University has spared no effort in her weight loss journey: exercising with social media bloggers, eating "fat loss meals" following online weight loss recipes, and using the "16+8" weight loss method. However, all of these methods have had little effect on her.
Last summer vacation, Cheng Lu's dissatisfaction with her body reached a peak. Coincidentally, a body management store opened next to the community, and she quickly enrolled in a "weight loss class".
After a period of time, she realized that the body management of the so-called "weight loss class" was nothing more than limiting calorie intake and adding instrument massage.
Due to excessive calorie intake restrictions, she often experiences a state of hunger and lethargy during the "weight loss class". She realized that such a method might be harmful to her health, so she promptly terminated the "course experience".
Cheng Lu has tried many other methods, but the long-term intermittent "effort" not only did not receive feedback, but also made her doubt herself to a certain extent, and her mentality began to become anxious. Therefore, she also decided to take this weight loss course at school.
The Beijing Youth Daily reporter learned that the weight loss course at Peking University has become a popular course at the school in just over a year since the start of the autumn semester in 2022.
Students who have taken this course and successfully lost weight have become active advertisements for this weight loss course, so even if another class is added later, many students still cannot compete for this course.
Students from Peking University are experiencing flexibility training
This course is the first one jointly completed by teachers from different majors in the Physical Education Research Department of Peking University. It is divided into three parts: theoretical lectures, sports training, and practical discussions.
The theoretical teaching is led by Zhang Xiaoyuan, assistant professor of the Department of Physical Education and Research at Peking University. The sports guidance received by students is carried out on-site by professional physical education teachers in sports venues such as gyms.
When it comes to course content, students who have taken the course generally evaluate it as "gradual and flexible".
02 Avoiding "Daqing Oilfield" Meals, Classroom Moved to Canteen
March 22nd, Friday morning.
In the cafeteria of Peking University, a group of students holding pens and paper gathered around a food scale and a pile of breakfast, their brows furrowed. This is not some strange ceremony, but the weight loss class has been moved to the cafeteria.
Today, what they need to learn is not mathematical formulas, but how to calculate the calories in their bowl of rice.
In the first class at 8am that day, Zhang Xiaoyuan and her classmates came to the cafeteria and asked them to buy breakfast according to their usual habits.
Building dry bought soybean milk and steamed stuffed buns, which is his standard breakfast. After we finished buying food at the window, the teacher gave us a food scale and asked us to weigh our breakfast. With the weight data of breakfast, the teacher also gave each person a table, which wrote the protein, fat, and carbohydrate content of different foods.
Lou Yuqian carefully compared the table and calculated his breakfast calories. "This class made me realize that I really eat a lot of breakfast every day."
"Braised eggplant rice in brown sauce is simply something that 'Daqing Oilfield' should avoid," said a classmate. "Reduce the importance of eating by seven points and practicing by three points." Zhang Xiaoyuan also had some insights.
In this class, Zhang Xiaoyuan provided a formula that includes factors such as height and age. Each student can calculate the recommended daily intake during weight loss and the calorie intake from their original diet based on the formula.
Based on calorie values, each student can choose the proportion of carbon, water, fat, and protein intake according to their personal dietary preferences.
At the cafeteria of Peking University, the teacher led the students to calculate food calories by weighing them
As a foodie, the minced meat Rice noodles on the second floor of Peking University's Agricultural Garden Canteen, the sour beef noodles in Xuewu Canteen, and the Guilin rice noodle in the former Yannan Canteen are all Li Shan's "love".
Before taking this course, Li Shan also searched online for some weight loss methods, and "all vegetarian weight loss method" is one of them. During the use of this weight loss method, Li Shan consumed a large amount of carbohydrates, but the weight loss effect was not ideal.
After knowing the amount of energy she needed for a day, Li Shan suddenly lowered her calorie intake target to the lowest level, but it was equivalent to suddenly reducing her appetite by one-third, making it very painful to persist. Later, according to her teacher's guidance, she adjusted her intake to 1500-1600 kcal, and after adapting, it slowly decreased to below 1300 kcal.
After a period of course learning and practical guidance from the teacher, Building Qian felt that he had greatly improved his dietary habits.
He began to pay attention to the intake of vegetables and learned to adjust his diet based on food ingredients. "Nowadays, every time I walk into the cafeteria, I unconsciously estimate the calories of food, which has become a habit."
Of course, there are always temptations in life, and when having meals with friends, the building may occasionally indulge. "If I have a lot to do this week, I will exercise for a longer period of time next weekend or use diet control."
As a native of Shanxi, Hou Xiaoyang has loved to eat noodles since childhood and often "matches carbon water with carbon water". It is common to have two large bowls of food in one meal.
From the first day of the weight loss class, he began recording three meals a day, daily weight, exercise duration, and comparing daily and weekly weight changes.
In a densely packed table that he has been recording since September 18, 2023, the frequency of appearance of black fungus cabbage, tofu eggs, and sweet potato corn is very high; The National Day holiday will be slightly indulgent, but at the same time, it will also increase the amount of cycling and mountain climbing.
Hou Xiaoyang's Recipe
After such adjustments, Hou Xiaoyang's weight decreased by two to three pounds per week, dropping from 220 pounds to 207 pounds in a month.
Zhang Xiaoyuan told the Beijing Youth Daily reporter that taking students to the cafeteria to calculate the calories of common foods was originally scheduled for the second half of the course, but due to the good response of the students, it has now been adjusted to the first half of the semester by him. "I am also constantly improving the course schedule.".
Scientifically proportioned "weight loss meals"
03 Self discipline gives me freedom, which is the advertising slogan, and desire is the driving force
Weight loss relies on "controlling your mouth and stepping out of your legs". How to operate it specifically?
Beijing University of Science and Technology chooses to start with "heart". Among the three teachers in the team, Li Danyang is a PhD in sports psychology, and she is responsible for sports psychological counseling in the team.
Li Danyang told the Beijing Youth Daily reporter that in addition to a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25, applicants for the weight loss camp also need to fill out a questionnaire called "Negative Body Self Weight".
What is "fat negative physical self"? Li Danyang explained that "negative body self obesity", also known as body image imbalance, refers to an individual's negative cognition, emotional experience, and behavioral regulation of the body. In other words, a person who is not overweight thinks they are overweight, and therefore adopts unhealthy or extreme weight loss methods such as medication and dieting, which is a psychological problem.
Weight loss camps will help these "fat negative physical self" campers solve the psychological problems that plague them, accept their bodies psychologically, and live a healthy life.
The training site of the summer weight loss camp at Peking University of Science and Technology
"Exercise is a good doctor. It not only helps people lose weight and shape, but also improves their mental health. In addition to exercise, we also provide psychological education lectures and exercise counseling to help everyone improve their mental health in all aspects," said Li Danyang.
Zhang Xiaoyuan from Peking University also stated that weight loss is a long-term process and cannot always be accompanied by psychological pain. In addition to providing scientific dietary plans, weight loss classes will also design personalized exercise plans for students.
For example, Li Shan finds running to lose weight very difficult, so her teacher suggests that she choose a slow climbing exercise method, which not only ensures fat burning effect but also makes it easier to persist.
According to Lou Yuqian, during the course, teachers from different sports projects will take everyone to experience flexibility training, rock climbing and other sports... They will also explain the effects of these sports on fat burning and weight loss. Students can choose projects that they are interested in and can persist in.
Peking University students are experiencing rock climbing projects
After trying many projects, Building Qian particularly favored "jogging", "the speed is relatively slow, and half an hour a day is not a problem."
I thought it would be boring, but in reality, every class is very interesting and I have learned a lot of practical knowledge. Although this course does not emphasize hard weight loss goals, by the time of physical testing, the building had already lost 6 pounds.
At the same time, this process also reversed his inherent impression of "losing weight" and helped him develop healthy lifestyle habits. "I started looking forward to every morning run and enjoying the satisfaction brought by every bite of healthy food," said the building manager.
Hou Xiaoyang, who took this course last year, did not lose weight during the early physical examination of the course and only scored 59 points in the physical examination. However, after a semester of study, Hou Xiaoyang's weight loss effect was excellent, losing 30 pounds directly and earning a reward score, ultimately achieving a score of 91.
Hou Xiaoyang said that the biggest gain after losing weight is confidence. He said that after losing weight, his overall appearance and spirit have greatly improved, and he is more willing to participate in some social activities. "I used to be very limited in my choice of clothes. This year, when I came home for the Chinese New Year, my family said that after losing weight, clothes would be easy to buy. The clothes I bought last year can't hold up this year at all. This feeling is really great."
"Losing weight is a process of resisting entropy increase," Hou Xiaoyang said, even though it is not strictly controlled like last year, his weight is still slowly declining. "I used to feel that my form was not good enough and always avoided taking photos. Losing weight gave me a sense of achievement and confidence in controlling my body."
After taking this course, Cheng Lu lost more than 10 pounds and did not rebound after more than a year. "His mentality has also become calm," he said
"Self discipline gives me freedom. I've heard of this saying before, and I think it's just an advertising slogan. Desire is the catalyst and driving force of behavior," said Zhang Bing, one of the course instructors and associate professor of the Department of Physical Education at Peking University.
04 helped students complete physical testing courses, which became a hot topic throughout the school
The Beijing Youth Daily reporter learned that this autumn, the weight loss camp of Peking University of Science and Technology will officially be transformed into the school's physical education class, which includes physical training, sports physiology, sports health and rehabilitation, sports psychology, and more. These contents complement each other, helping Peking University students shape their bodies and improve their physical and mental health.
Peking University has directly included this "weight loss course" as a compulsory course for the entire school (counted towards compulsory physical education credits).
The courseware taught by Teacher Zhang Xiaoyuan
When it comes to the original intention of offering this course, Professor Zhang Xiaoyuan, the person in charge of the course, said that the current situation of physical health testing for college students is not optimistic.
Currently, the country is paying more and more attention to the physical health testing of college students, and the requirements are becoming increasingly strict. The latest policy of Peking University is that students from 2022 and above who fail the physical fitness test will not be able to obtain their graduation certificate.
Zhang Xiaoyuan said that about 70% of students who fail the physical fitness test are overweight or obese, which in turn affects multiple physical health scores. For this group of students, the combined intervention of exercise and diet is the most effective.
The reason why Peking University of Science and Technology offers a weight loss camp course is also because some students encounter difficulties in physical testing, making it difficult to meet the standards. We hope to help students achieve the standards smoothly through weight loss and strengthening physical fitness.
Zhang Xiaoyuan's research focuses on exercise, nutrition, and health promotion, and has also been conducting research on overweight and obese populations.
Her doctoral research focuses on sports nutrition in the field of sports science. During her studies, she also accompanied her supervisor to a weight loss clinic at Peking University Third Hospital. She is also the only teacher from the Sports Teaching and Research Department of Peking University with a background in sports medicine.
Regarding the assessment method of this course, Zhang Xiaoyuan stated that the assessment content includes attendance (10%), physical test scores (20%), physical fitness improvement/body composition improvement (30%), and mid-term performance (40%).
At the beginning of the course, each student will develop their own diet and exercise plan. In addition to the performance during the semester being included in the assessment, if the weight loss is good, there will also be a certain reward score.
"Weight loss is a science, and it is not just about self-discipline that results in results. After losing weight, it is not just about changes in weight figures." Zhang Xiaoyuan said that the ultimate goal of offering this course is also to cultivate students' healthy lifestyle.
Netizen comments
From "hot and spicy" to this "magical course" at Peking University, Zhang Li, a researcher at the Research Institute of the general Administration of Sport of China, reminds everyone to establish a scientific concept of weight loss, pay more attention to the "quality" of weight loss, and not just focus on the total weight loss, ignoring how much fat, muscle, and water there is in the total weight loss, in order to avoid harm to health while losing weight.
A semester will soon pass, and outside of the classroom, students still need to walk their own weight loss path.
