The Monte Carlo algorithm, originally developed to simulate neutron transfer problems in nuclear reactors, recently appeared in an award-winning work at a youth science and technology innovation competition, causing considerable controversy. Some netizens exclaimed that the work has reached the level of a master's or doctoral degree, suspecting the existence of adult ghostwork. Recently, a staff member of the local education commission told Red Star News that the matter was being investigated by the Joint Organizing Committee with the participation of the Education Commission, the association for Science and Technology and other departments. At present, the investigation has no results. "We will definitely be more cautious in supervising various competitions, activities, and awards and evaluations in the future."
On May 21st, a staff member of the Office of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology told Red Star News that they had noticed the relevant issues and that the Youth Science and Technology center of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology was studying the next steps for improvement.
According to an investigation by Red Star News reporters, although there is still no consensus on this matter, there are already many online businesses that specialize in scientific research for primary and secondary school students. They claim that they only need to spend 800-3000 yuan to complete their work, purchase original products and related research reports, introduce the functions and creative sources in one step, and the entire process basically does not require the participation of the children themselves.
0 1 generation online store claims to win "bag award"
Provide a list of OEM products and operation videos
Searching for keywords such as "science and technology innovation agency", the reporter, as a parent, inquired about a Taobao store that provides youth technology innovation work agency services. This store claims to produce over 1900 products annually, "doing everything" and "able to produce in large quantities". The sales data shows that the monthly sales of a service product in the store exceeded 4000 pieces, and the sales of the product exceeded 40000 yuan.
A Taobao store that provides outsourcing services for young people's technological innovation works
The reporter then added the WeChat account of the store Teacher Cheng, who provided the reporter with a list of OEM products. There are more than 40 names and functional descriptions of OEM products in the list, including the more professional ones such as "Arduino based natural water discharge water quality monitoring station" and "RFID based operation collection and quantity statistics device", as well as "prevention of severe dog injury control system" and "intelligent piggy bank" that are close to daily life.
These works are roughly divided into social welfare, intelligent living, campus safety, intelligent transportation, environmental protection, pet management, and other aspects. Some projects not only provide functional introductions, but also elaborate on creative sources. For example, in the introduction of the creative source of "automatic timer for track and field running", the previous timing method was to manually press the stopwatch to time, making it difficult for referees to simultaneously time or count laps, resulting in missed laps and inaccurate timing. So this project has designed a device that can automatically detect the number of laps each athlete runs and the time of each lap.
▲ Intelligent piggy bank
The reporter chose to produce one of the products on behalf of others - the intelligent piggy bank, which will display the amount of money saved after being connected to the internet. Teacher Cheng quickly sent the operation demonstration video of the product to the reporter and stated that for only 2000 yuan, the original product and related research reports can be purchased. A simple transparent plastic box appears in the operation video, with wires wrapped around the box and a display screen and password button on top. Teacher Cheng introduced the basic methods of power supply and network configuration, how to enter a password to open the piggy bank, and emphasized how to use the infrared module to calculate the number of coins.
When the reporter asked how to prove that the child participated in the production of scientific research achievements, Teacher Cheng said that in addition to taking a set of physical products for the competition, an additional set of photos of the production process can also be taken as reference materials for the judges.
Teacher Cheng's Moments have shared many feedback from winning buyers who have used their entries. Some buyers claim to have participated in the National Youth Science and Technology Innovation competition or the National Youth Invention Award, while others have won the first prize in 9 groups at the city level. according to Teacher Cheng, the store also sells products in bulk to training institutions, with a model similar to selling to individual buyers, including a complete set of works and research reports.
Teacher Cheng claimed to the reporter that with his help, participating in the 2023-2024 National Youth Communication Technology Innovation Competition can result in a refund without receiving the prize package. According to him, participating in a certain event of the competition only requires a cost of 7000 yuan to win the provincial first prize, tied to the national third prize.
"To put it bluntly, it's like spending money to buy a prize. Please provide your personal registration information and I'll help you with the operation. Then you just sit and wait to win the prize," said Teacher Cheng. When the reporter expressed doubts about whether he could win the award, Teacher Cheng further stated that he "has internal channels". The reporter consulted another agency about the competition, and the other party stated that for only 399 yuan, one can purchase an "award winning" participating account. As long as the contestant participates online through this account, they can guarantee a minimum of one provincial-level third prize.
The impact of winning a prize in a competition on further education:
Although it is stipulated that it cannot be used as a bonus, it still has advantages
Red Star News reporters learned that in the past, many universities would make requirements for students to win awards in science and technology innovation competitions during independent enrollment. In 2020, the Ministry of Education formulated and issued the "Opinions on Pilot Work of Basic subject Enrollment Reform in Some Universities". Since then, the "Strong Foundation Plan" and "Comprehensive Evaluation" have become alternative plans for independent enrollment.
In September 2022, the general Office of the Ministry of Education issued a notice on the publication of national competition activities for primary and secondary school students in the 2022-2025 academic year. The attached list of national competition activities for primary and secondary school students in the 2022-2025 academic year includes 44 competition activities. The notice stipulates that the competition and its results in the list shall not be used as the basis for enrollment in primary and secondary schools or as a bonus for the college entrance examination. But according to the reporter's understanding, due to the certification of the Ministry of Education and a mature evaluation system, the events on the list have high value and are commonly referred to as "whitelist events" by the public. This controversial science and technology innovation competition is also included.
However, in fact, students still have significant advantages in advancing to higher education due to their unique skills.
Some universities still mention in their enrollment brochures that they hope students have "research aspirations" and "innovative potential.". For example, in the "2023 Comprehensive Evaluation Enrollment Brochure" of Jiangsu normal University, it is stated that "high school seniors who meet one of the following conditions can apply for registration", including "winning the third prize or above in provincial-level science and technology competitions such as the National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition, National Youth Biology and Environmental Science Practice Activity, and" Tomorrow's Little Scientist "reward activity during high school."
The Red Star News reporter reviewed the 2023 independent enrollment plan of a directly affiliated high school in Shanghai, which stated in the enrollment requirements column: "Excellent performance in single subject literacy or outstanding performance in scientific and technological innovation and social practice activities." Another directly affiliated high school's 2023 independent enrollment plan also requires students to "demonstrate certain strengths in mathematics, physics, chemistry, or scientific and technological innovation and practical activities."
0 3 Science and Technology Innovation Competition Judges:
If the work clearly exceeds the student's ability range, the score will not be too high
For the so-called "guaranteed prize" claimed by the above online stores, in the eyes of a teacher at a youth training institution in the southwest region, the competition they participated in was of little value and "useless, as the judges and teachers can see at a glance.". He told Red Star News reporters that it is not difficult for middle school students with zero foundation to reach the level where they can participate in competitions, usually requiring about a year of study. And some institutions, in order to quickly produce results, will directly ask teachers to help students do it.
The institutional teacher stated that science and technology innovation ultimately needs children's interests. From the award-winning works he has tutored in the past, creative ideas generally come from life, and then survey questionnaires and works are gradually implemented. The teacher's role in guiding and improving is sufficient. "With good ideas, it is not difficult to win in competitions, but if students have not learned much knowledge and find someone to do it, winning is not meaningful."
So how can we distinguish the traces of agency in the entries? The reporter consulted with the organizers of a recent "whitelist" natural science literacy competition held in Shanghai as the guiding teacher for the competition. The teacher in charge of the competition introduced that the competition is divided into two parts: pre evaluation and post defense. The judges and experts will first review the materials submitted by the contestants. If the entries clearly exceed the ability range of middle school students, "the judges and experts have a clear idea in their minds, and their scores will not be too high." During the on-site defense, the experts will ask the contestants about the basic knowledge related to the works.
A judge who has participated in a science and technology innovation competition in the southwest region told Red Star News that when he encounters entries that clearly exceed his knowledge reserve in that age group, he will focus his questions on the detailed process of science and technology innovation and invention. However, the organizer's teacher also admitted, "Despite these 'identification' processes, it is sometimes difficult for us to determine whether individual works were actually created by the students themselves and whether there was a situation where the teacher acted on their behalf."
Zhu Bangfen, an academician of the CAS Member and professor of the department of Physics of Tsinghua University, once said in an interview with Science and Technology Daily: "When the results of teenagers' scientific and technological innovation activities are related to their entrance to higher education, some parents and teachers will find ways to 'take shortcuts'."
Zhu Bangfen believes that some parents and teachers need to change their understanding of science and technology innovation competitions. "It's not about doing a few seemingly prestigious projects or winning awards in certain competitions that children can succeed; grades in science and technology activities are not the key to good schools. Participating in such activities not only cultivates interests and professional abilities, but also pays attention to cultivating children's character, such as integrity, down-to-earth work, resilience, etc. These qualities are not only important for every child, but more important for the future of the country."
